Trigger Warnings
outing: A character gets violently outed as part of the plot. internalized homophobia: Previously aforementioned gay character has a lot of internalized homophobia. violence: As in most of the CHB Chronicles books, there is violence. Many weapons are involved throughout the book, and two characters get an arrow through the arm, one gets bitten by a sort of vampire and suffers a lot of pain for taking on "curses" as part of the plot.

Controversies
Many parents did not want their children reading a book where there is a gay character who has a crush on the one of the current protagnists and protaganist of the last series. On the opposite side of the spectrum, you have the queer readers critiquing the way the series' first gay character was revealed, as well as the way characters of color are portrayed.
